The Humberstone Saltpeter Works is a journey back in time to the golden age of saltpeter, when the Tarapacá desert was the economic engine of Chile. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, this ghost town preserves houses, the church, the theater, the general store, the iron swimming pool, and the industrial facilities where thousands of pampinos (saltpeter workers) lived and worked until the mid-20th century.

Walking through its silent streets is like immersing yourself in pampino culture: every building tells stories of hard work, labor organization, and life under extreme conditions. It is located about 45 minutes from Iquique, along the route heading inland, and can be visited year-round. An absolute must-see for those who want to understand the history of Chile's Great North.
